The mission of the Department of Medicine is to improve the health of individual
patients and populations by providing safe, evidence-based, humanistic care in
a manner that is efficient, equitable, and always improving and to advance the
field of medicine through leadership in education, groundbreaking research and
innovation.
Our vision for the Department of Medicine is to provide the support and structure
that will empower every individual member of the Department to succeed and excel
along the lines of their talent and passion, while contributing to the collective
mission, and to promote respect for equality and human rights. In order to accomplish
this mission successfully, a large spectrum of expertise and talent is needed,
and the Department must provide the institutional and technical structure to empower
faculty and trainees to work in teams within the philosophy of “flying-in-formation”.
The faculty must be secure and enfranchised to be willing to take professional
risks. It is the aim to strike a unique balance between entrepreneurship and discipline
to allow collaboration within and outside the Department to promote collective
breakthroughs.
In attaining our vision, we will maintain the following values:
- Alignment, transparency, accountability.
- Honesty, truthfulness and open communication. The mission has to be articulated
clearly by the leadership and communicated to those in the trenches in a way that
invites a dialogue.
- Fiscal discipline and transparency.
- Fairness and respect for diversity and human rights at all levels.
- Respect for confidentiality and privacy.
